Canada's Provincial Nominee Program

Provincial Nominee Program allows Canadian provinces and territories to nominate individuals for immigration to Canada who meet the province’s or territories specific economic needs. On the other hand, the Canadian province of Quebec has the authority to create its selection criteria for economic immigration. Nunavut and Quebec are the only exceptions in the Northern Canada Territory.

Territories

The program is designed to allow Canadian provinces and territories to attract foreign nationals with the skills and experience needed to support their economy. Provincial nominees must intend to live in the province or territory that nominates them and must meet the specific criteria that that province or territory has set. You can Contact Canada Immigration Services for more information about this program.

Canada’s Immigration Policy

Before PNP’s launch, most of Canada’s migrants settled in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. However, since 1998, Canada’s immigration policy has contributed to a broad distribution of immigration across the country, with more success in attracting movers and skilled workers since the Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) and Atlantic Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador) have seen greater success attracting immigrants owing to the PNP.

Remember that each province and territory has its own “streams” (immigration programs that target certain groups) and standards. For example, in a program stream, provinces and territories could choose to target:

  • Students
  • Business persons
  • Skilled workers
  • Semi-skilled workers

How to Apply for Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program?

Your application depends on which Provincial Nominee Program stream you are applying for. Also, you need to pass the medical exams and get the police verification done. The PNP application process involves the following steps:

First, you need to contact the province or territory where you want to settle and find out if they have a PNP.

If you meet the requirements of a specific PNP stream, you need to submit the paper application for permanent immigration, citizenship, or as a refugee.

After you apply, the province or territory will assess your application based on their criteria. If nominated, you must apply to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for permanent residency.
